1.她不但聰明,而且很用功讀書。 tɑ̄ bú dɑ̀n cōng míng,ér qiě hěn yòng gōng dú shū. She is not only clever, but also works very hard. |

2. 他不但喜歡中文,而且喜歡音樂。 tɑ̄ bù dɑ̀n xǐ huɑn zhōng wén kē,ér qiě xǐ huɑn yīn yuè kē。 He likes not only Chinese, but also Music. |
From the above examples, you can find that the Chinese sentence is more complicated than the English one for adding information. We have to include a verb in the clause in Chinese. |

As in Example 2, the verb “xǐ huɑn” (喜歡) has to be repeated in the second sentence in Chinese. However, the verb is not necessary in the English one. |
